GUARD-1 Autonomous system for the acquisition and recognition of high resolution underwater images

Programma Operativo Regionale POR-FESR (2007-2013) - Asse 1 Innovazione e Competitività, Bando D.L.T.M. - Azione 1.2.2 “Ricerca industriale e sviluppo sperimentale a favore delle imprese del Distretto Ligure per le Tecnologie Marine (DLTM)”

GUARD-1 is a stand-alone device, developed in close collaboration with CNR-ISMAR, where an image acquisition sensor is coupled with a software component for real-time image processing and recognition. The acquired images are processed on board where relevant information is extracted and stored on the memory support of the instrument.

The main role of On AIR in the project regards:

  • the design and realization of hardware/software architecture of the system
  • the design and developent of algorithms to detect jellies
  • their implementation on embedded systems (Raspberry Pi)

It is very difficult to identify the features that discriminate the jellies from other subjects, due to:

  • huge variety of species and shapes
  • non-rigid shape
  • the body is almost transparent
  • poor lighting conditions

The project led to a patent granted from EPO (EP2863257)
